Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research: Which Do You Need?
"Do I need to talk to people, or do I need a spreadsheet?"
This is the most common question we get at SegmentOS. The answer, unfortunately, is "Both." But you need them at different times for different reasons.
If you use the wrong method at the wrong time, you will build a product that works perfectly for a market that doesn't exist.
Quantitative Research: The "What"
Quantitative (Quant) is about numbers, hard data, and statistical significance.
The Format: Multiple choice surveys, 1-5 scales, analytics dashboards.
When to use it: When you need to measure how many people have a problem, or validate a price point.
Sample Size: Usually 100+ people.
The SegmentOS Advantage: We provide rapid Quant data (survey panels) in 48 hours.
Qualitative Research: The "Why"
Qualitative (Qual) is about feelings, motivations, and stories.
The Format: Open-ended text questions, Zoom interviews, focus groups.
When to use it: When you don't even know what the problem is yet. You use Qual to discover the hypothesis.
Sample Size: Can be as small as 5-10 people.
The "Hybrid" Approach
The best builders loop these two together:
Start with Qual: Ask open-ended questions to find out what people hate about their current solution.
Move to Quant: Take those complaints and run a survey to see if 1,000 other people feel the same way.
Deep Dive: This process is the core of our strategy. Read What is Market Research? The Ultimate Guide for Builders to see how they fit together.
Which one should you choose today?
If you are just starting and have no idea who your customer is -> Qualitative.
If you have an idea and need to prove investors it will scale -> Quantitative.
If you are unsure -> SegmentOS supports both in a single dashboard.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which research method should I start with?
Always start with Qualitative (Discovery) to figure out what questions to ask. Then, use Quantitative (Validation) to verify that those answers apply to a large market.
Is Qualitative research expensive?
It can be time-consuming (conducting interviews), but it doesn't have to be expensive. You can often start with just 5-10 deep conversations to get actionable insights.
Can I combine both methods in one survey?
es. A "Hybrid Survey" is very effective. Use multiple-choice questions for the stats (Quant) and add 1-2 open-ended text box questions to capture the "Why" (Qual).
Is Quantitative research only for big companies?
No. Platforms like SegmentOS have democratized data. You can now run professional Quantitative panels starting at $119, making it accessible for early-stage startups.
How do I analyze text answers from a Qualitative survey?
Use a process called "Codification." Read the responses and tag them with themes (e.g., "Price Sensitivity," "Feature Request"). Count the tags to turn your stories into data.
